“We train computer scientists who play a responsible role in shaping society.”
Particularly in times of political uncertainty, publicly discussed examples – such as the consistent open-source strategy in Schleswig-Holstein or Berlin – highlight the opportunities for breaking free from dependence on large tech corporations. Prof. Dr. Karin Vosseberg will present how the computer science degree programmes at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences have long been prioritising digital sovereignty and equipping their students for open source at the SCS Summit 2026 on Thursday, 21 May, in Berlin. Tickets for the event are still available. Further information can be found at https://sovereigncloudstack.org/insights/scs-summit-2026/.

Success at the TROPHELIA competition with a healthy baking mix
A baking mix for vegan muffins that is both high in protein and a source of fibre, contains significantly less sugar than conventional mixes, and can be quickly prepared in an air fryer: can it actually taste good? Yes, says the jury of the TROPHELIA Germany ideas competition. Food technology students Lena Pottharst and Mariana Domke impressed the judges with their product “Happy Beans” and took third place.
CHE Ranking: Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences once again tops the charts
Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences can once again celebrate a top rating in the university ranking by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE). Students were surveyed in the Bachelor’s degree programmes in Business Administration (including the practice-integrated dual programme), International Tourism Management (formerly Cruise Tourism Management), Start-ups, Innovation and Leadership, Social Work, Business Informatics, and Transport, Economics and Logistics (formerly Transport and Logistics). Students particularly praise the support provided by teaching staff, the range of courses on offer, the career and practical focus, the library facilities and the organisation of the degree programmes. The programmes also impress with the support provided at the start of studies and their international focus.

Passionate about research
The university has four research clusters in which it works on a broad range of topics to address the societal challenges of our times.
Discover all four research clusters by clicking on the tabs.
A clear priority in the university's research and development activities is the area of energy and marine technology. A considerable percentage of the university's third-party research funding can be attributed to this area.
Research activities in the life sciences are largely built on the expertise in the study programmes Biotechnology, Food Technology, Medical Technologies and Physician Assistant. Apart from marine research topics ranging from marine microbiology to fisheries biology, application-oriented research in the food sector is also of exceptional importance.
Linking the disciplines of 'logistics' and 'information systems' in one research cluster allows us to conduct applied research to identify, evaluate and realise potential for logistics and related areas. This is how we connect different areas, including such areas as digitalisation and maritime processes.
The research cluster Tourism and Management brings together research in the areas of the international tourism industry (esp. cruise tourism) and general management. In both areas, the focus is primarily on strategic issues and application-oriented, practical research.
