15 years on the path to becoming an accessible university
Whether people with disabilities can enter buildings without restriction and without assistance, or have access to information or areas of life, is a question of accessibility. These opportunities for participation are fundamental human rights. For around 15 years, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences has been working to become as accessible as possible. Staff, lecturers and students are involved in the Accessible University Working Group and, together with the relevant departments and committees, are driving important changes. This also takes into account disabilities that are not visible at first glance. Among other things, a low-stimulus retreat and relaxation room will soon be available.

Medical technologies: a key technology that improves the lives of many people
Dental implants, sunglasses from the optician, the smartwatch on your wrist – all these are products that would be inconceivable without medical technology. "Medical technology products are in widespread use," confirms Prof. Dr Susanne Reimann, an expert in medical technology materials and a lecturer on the Medical Technology degree programme at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. "Whether it’s implants that restore mobility to people with osteoarthritis or sensors that monitor blood sugar levels – medical technology is with us from the cradle to the grave."

Tinkering with sustainable recycling solutions
PET bottles carelessly thrown away, shopping bags washed ashore and discarded single-use packaging: plastic waste is a major problem for the environment. In Gran Canaria, this was the starting point for the ‘Smart Green Island Makeathon’, an event that has attracted hundreds of tinkerers to Las Palmas for the ninth time this year. Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and the Max-Eyth School in Schiffdorf formed a joint team for the first time to search for innovative technical solutions for recycling.
